BS-VII Emission Norms from 2027: Impact on CNG Vehicles and EV Batteries

The country is gearing up for the next major shift in vehicle emission standards. The government has already initiated steps to implement BS-VII (Bharat Stage-VII) norms starting in 2027.Alongside reducing pollution levels, the introduction of new regulations for gas-fueled vehicles (including CNG) and Electric Vehicle (EV) batteries marks a significant milestone.

Bharat Stage 7 (BS-VII)

Bharat Stage standards are the backbone of India’s vehicle pollution control system. BS-VII is the next phase aimed at improving environmental quality by further reducing the emission of harmful gases.

• Real-time Monitoring: Vehicles may feature systems for the continuous monitoring of emission levels.

• Real-world Emissions: Rather than relying solely on laboratory tests, the focus will shift to pollution levels emitted while the vehicle is actually on the road. To facilitate this, manufacturers must install on-board monitoring systems.

• Stricter Limits: Tougher restrictions will be placed on the emission of Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxides, and Ammonia, which will significantly help in reducing air pollution.

CNG Vehicles and EV Batteries

• CNG Vehicles: CNG vehicles, currently considered eco-friendly, will face stricter scrutiny. This is part of an effort to bring uniform quality standards across all fuel types.

• EV Battery Safety: New laws ensuring the safety and durability of electric vehicles will instill more confidence in buyers.

• Performance Standards: New regulations will be introduced regarding minimum battery life, safety protocols, and overall performance efficiency.

Fuel Quality and Vehicle Prices

A positive aspect is that transitioning to BS-VII may not require major changes to existing fuel quality.Vehicle prices are expected to rise:

• Manufacturers will face higher costs due to the implementation of advanced emission control technologies.

• Diesel engines will likely require significant upgrades. Just as many companies discontinued diesel variants when BS-VI was introduced, more may follow suit now.

• Even for petrol engines, upgrading existing technology involves high costs. While this will lead to a hike in vehicle prices, the value of reducing atmospheric pollution is immeasurable.

Current Status: The Central Government is currently finalizing the BS-VII framework. Draft guidelines will soon be released to gather opinions from the public and industry experts.
